- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- ⅓ cup fresh orange juice
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- ¾ cup sour cream or plain yogurt
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 3 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
- 1 tablespoon orange zest (for frosting)
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two 8-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cardamom, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla, orange juice, and zest.
- Add dry ingredients alternately with sour cream, mixing just until combined.
- Divide batter between pans and bake 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat butter until creamy, then add powdered sugar, orange zest, and juice. Beat until fluffy.
- Assemble cake by layering frosting between layers and around the sides and top. Garnish if desired.

- This cake can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
