Description
A delicious recipe for homemade naan that is soft and fluffy, perfect for pairing with your favorite curries.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup Greek yogurt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons melted butter or ghee (for brushing)
- 1–2 cloves minced garlic or 1 teaspoon garlic powder (for garlic naan)
- 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro, mint, or parsley (for herb-infused naan)
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or paneer (for cheese naan)
- 1 cup whole wheat flour (optional)
- Coconut yogurt and plant-based margarine (for vegan naan)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly and activated.
- Then add all-purpose flour, salt, and Greek yogurt, mixing until a rough dough forms.
- Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Kneading develops gluten, giving your Naan its chewy texture.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
- Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions, then roll each piece into an oval or teardrop shape about 1/4 inch thick using a rolling pin.
- Heat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for 2-3 minutes on one side until bubbles appear, then flip and cook the other side until browned and slightly charred.
- Brush the hot naan with melted butter or ghee immediately after cooking. Serve warm for best taste and texture.
Notes
- For whole wheat naan, replace up to 1 cup of all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
- For a vegan version, use coconut yogurt and plant-based margarine.
